How to Find a Good San Diego Roofer

Tips on how to find the best San Diego roofer for your job. Remember to look local and check license, insurance, references, and safety.

How to find a good roofer in San Diego

Looking for a good San Diego roofer? When searching for a roofer, there are a lot many factors to consider besides just the price. Roofing is more complicated than laying down a few tiles or shingles. A roofing system includes everything from framing, underlayment, ventilation, gutters, flashing, and skylights. A good roofer not only knows roofing, but also carpentry, house and roof ventilation, and millwork.

How to Find a Roofer

When looking for a good San Diego roofing company, here are some things to keep in mind:

Look Local

Using a local San Diego roofer has several benefits. First, they will be more familiar with the local building codes and the process of applying for permits in your area. Second, they will be familiar with the local climate and what building materials and techniques work best in your area. Third, they are much easier to track down if you have problems with finishing the job, warranties, or repair work. Fourth, local roofers are more often small, family-owned companies who are invested in your community.

Checking References

To find a roofer, make sure you do your homework first. Start with a simple internet search for their name and phone number. Visit review websites that include reviews from previous customers and ask for references from the company. Look to see if your roofer holds a good rating with the Better Business Bureau.

License

Make sure your roofing contractor is licensed. Getting a license requires passing a test to measure competency and shows that your contractor is following local laws. Any dedicated, professional contractor will have a license. Working with a licensed contractor also gives you a related government agency to turn to if there is a problem. Get the roofer’s business license number and check with the city or county to make sure they comply with any regulations. For San Diego roofers, you can check their state license at cslb.ca.gov.

Insurance

Make sure your roofing contractor is insured. The State of California requires all licensed contractors to have workmen’s compensation insurance. If an employee gets hurt while on the job, the insurance company pays all the related medical expenses. However, if your contractor does not have workmen’s compensation insurance, you could be liable for medical costs, lost wages, and other related costs.

Many professional roofers also carry a general liability insurance policy to protect you against any losses due to fire, injuries, death, or structure damage.

Any reputable roofing company will be more than happy to give you the name of their insurance carrier. You can then check their coverage directly with the carrier. Before you select a contractor, make sure your interests are protected.

Go With Your Gut

Make sure you meet with any roofing company that you plan on hiring. Get a feel for their personality and if they are somebody you would like to work with. Do they have a positive attitude? Do they take pride in their work? Are they excited about helping you with your problems? Are they responsive to your calls? Do they get you the information you request?

Good roofers will be willing to take the time to explain any issues or decisions with you. They will not make you feel silly for asking questions or brush over any of your concerns. And don’t forget, if something sounds fishy, it probably is.

Safety

Working on a roof can be dangerous. Find a roofer who is professional and takes the necessary precautions. A dirty worksite can be a safety hazard. Make sure your roofer has a system in place to keep the job site clean throughout the entire process. Avoid contractors who plan on just cleaning up at the end. If you have a steep roof, find out if they have experience working on steep roofs and if they use climbing gear.

I’ve been around since 1930, and have worked with people and for companies since the age of 12, starting with the largest paper route in my delivery district and including just about any type of work you can think of. I’ve seen and experienced it all. From the first few moments I spoke by phone with Linda, the office manager at T. R. Construction, I recognized something special. Then when Tony, the owner, came and did an estimate for a new roof on our home, that special feeling multiplied. The date was set and on that Monday the removal of the old roof began punctually. The foreman for that specific job was Angel, and he couldn’t have explained it better. His crew was organized, coordinated, careful, neat and speedy. They finished their part in one day. Following that, the roofers came and in showcase fashion demonstrated in three days the proper way to install a new roof. I’ve never seen such teamwork. The entire procedure was phenomenal, and at the end of Thursday the finished product, along with the new rain gutters and spouts, was something any homeowner would view with admiration and gratification. Next, an exterior paint job by T.R. Construction. I cannot recommend them more highly. They are simply the BEST!

Experience

Good roofers should stay abreast of all the latest advances in techniques and materials. Your roofer should be well trained and have plenty of experience working with roofs. Find out if the roofer employs a permanent crew. Some contractors will hire temporary labor with little to no experience to save money.

It is also a good idea to meet with a professional roofer, not just a salesperson. Salespeople will sometimes promise more than the actual roofing crew can deliver.

Make sure your roofer knows the manufacturer’s specifications for any materials used on your roof. Installing something incorrectly can void your product warranties. TR Construction is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Owens Corning carefully vets roofers, looking at things like workmanship, credit reviews, proper licensing, and proper installation methods.

Ask About The Process

Roofing isn’t always pleasant. You will have people up on your roof for days and it can get loud and noisy. Ask potential roofers what their process is for roof tear offs and what things they will do to protect your home and landscape. Learn more about our highly efficient roof tear off system.

The Estimate

Look for a detailed estimate that clearly outlines what work will be performed and how much it will cost. From the estimate, you should have a clear understanding of what needs to be done on your roof and what will be done to fix any problems.
